Object Description
The William Weber House - shown here in the mid-1960s. The home was built in 1898 and designed by George W. Maher, a noted Prairie School architect who also designed the home to the north at 12950 Greenwood, Sanders School, and the final iteration of Liederkranz Hall, now the site of Eagles Hall, in Blue Island. Blue Island-born architect Robert Seyfarth worked under Maher for many years early in his career, eventually striking out on his own to have a long and successful independent career. Seyfarth designed another Prairie School home directly across the street from William for his daughter, Olive, and her husband, Robert Berry.
William Weber started out as an educator, earning his degree from the Cook County Normal School, now Chicago State University, and came to Blue Island from Tinley Park in 1889. He served as President of the Blue Island Board of Education and was a member of the board of directors at the Commercial Bank, later the First National Bank of Blue Island. Active in the Republican Party for many years, he was the longest serving member of the Cook County Board of Assessors a delegate at several Republican national conventions.
